Eating clean and healthy can be a challenge when traveling. I often struggle with eating clean when I am on a trip. The second I get home I crave healthy food because I have been eating bad. In most big cities, fast food chains are often the restaurants that are closest to the main attractions. This is why I often get tempted to grab a quick bite at fast food chains to save time, instead of taking the limited time on their trip to search for a better option. I often found myself eating bad and not taking the time to eat because I wanted to have as much time as possible to shop and explore. However, those places don’t even fill you up most of the time. In addition to that, the food can be very pricy due to the restaurant’s central location. If you want to learn more on how to eat healthy while traveling, keep on reading.
How to eat healthy while traveling
Most of the time, small cafes and healthy restaurants are just a few blocks from the center but you would never find them by just walking around. Small cafes and cute lunch spots are often hidden and inconspicuous from the outside. This is at least what I learned from my experience. Many times I thought to myself, that I would have never found that place if I haven’t researched it in advanced and used google maps to get there. Don’t get tempted by the fast food chain restaurants just because you are hungry. Well, at least if your goal is to eat healthy on your trip. If you want to know more on how to eat healthy while traveling, follow my four easy tips below:
Here are a few tips on how to eat healthy while traveling
1. Do your research in advance
There are many sites like Tripadvisor or even google in general that recommend restaurants and you can check their menu in advance. In addition to that, for most big cities, there are instagram accounts that are dedicated to food and restaurants that others liked and shared on their feed. I also always look at their menu in advance so that there are no surprises.
2. Map the restaurants and see which ones are close to attractions you might visit
Try to find at least one option near attractions or locations you want to visit. You don’t want to walk for 30 minutes to the next lunch spot when you’re already starving just because you didn’t look up the location of the restaurant in advance. Be smart. I usually prepare 2 or 3 lunch/dinner spots that are close to each location I want to go to. That way I always have an option no matter where I go.
3. Bring snacks for in-between meals
I usually bring fruit or protein bars for in between meals. That way you don’t have to starve before your next meal. Snacks don’t take up much space in your purse and aren’t heavy so it never hurts carrying some extra snacks around. This also goes for plane rides. It is always a good idea to have so extra snacks in case you get hungry.
4. Drink lots of water!
This can be very tricky on a city trip but it is a very important aspect to being healthy. I tend to forget to drink when I am traveling because everything is so exciting and I lose track of time. Also, I often find myself not drinking enough on purpose because it is always so hard to find restrooms in the city. So maybe one additional tip would be to look up some restrooms in advance so you don’t have to worry about that.
Essentially, it all comes down to preparation when trying to be healthy on a city trip. Finding restaurants in advance, looking up public restrooms, and bringing snacks and drinks. Eating healthy on a city trip can be tricky. However, with the right amount of dedication and preparation you don’t have to worry. Travelling can be fun, exciting and healthy at the same time.
